Motorola Press Event Highlights: Bionic,Cliq 2,Atrix 4G and XOOM

Highlights from Motorola’s Press Event where they showcased four Android devices: the Droid Bionic,Cliq 2, Atrix 4G and the XOOM tablet.

At the Motorola press event today (yesterday in Las Vegas due to timezone differences), they unveiled some exciting new products, three Android smartphones (the Cliq 2, Bionic and Atrix 4G) and an Android tablet (the XOOM).

As we knew, 4G was not going to be left out of most phone announcements at CES 2011 and all the announced devices support some sort of 4G technology. Motorola is doing some interesting things with some of these these devices a trend of docks and external keyboards for smartphones is emerging at CES 2011. It seems that hardware manuafcturer are trying hard to allow their devices to connect to as many external devices as possible to share media content and web browsing. We will highlight all four here but the XOOM and Atrix 4G most especially deserve special props.

Motorola DROID™ BIONIC

Motorola DROID BIONIC

  • Android 2.2 (upgradeable to 2.3; Gingerbread) device with
  • 4.3 inch qHD (Quarter High Definition – 960 x 540) screen,
  • 1GHz Dual Core Processor (2 processor cores running at 1GHz each) and
  • 512MB DDR2 RAM device,
  • 16GB internal storage + Expandable MicroSD up to 32GB
  • 4G LTE

Some of the specs make it sound like we are describing a netbook doesn’t it? The Droid™ Bionic (as the name suggests) will be released on Verizon.

Motorola CLIQ 2™

The Motorola CLIQ 2 is the second generation CLIQ from Motorola, set to be released exclusively to T-Mobile USA.

  • Android 2.2 with MOTOBLUR (also upgradeable) device with a
  • 1GHz Processor, 3.7 inch (854×480),
  • 512MB RAM (1GB ROM) and it has both
  • Touch + QWERTY Slider keyboard for input.
  • 3G

Motorola ATRIX™ 4G

The Motorola Atrix 4G is very similar to the DROID BIONIC and can be described as the AT&T flavour of Motorola’s 4G Dual Core smartphones. There will be versions for Bell Canada and Orange UK.

  • Android 2.2 (upgradeable to 2.3),
  • 1GHz Dual Core processor (2 processor cores running at 1GHz each);
  • 16GB internal storage, SD Card up to 32GB support
  • 1GB LP DDR2 RAM (LP = Low Power); Bionic has 512MB DDR2.

The Atrix needs the extra power. Connected to an HDMI compatible monitor, HD TV or Motorola’s Laptop Dock or HD Docks accessories, a special application (the webtop application) provides a full Mozilla Firefox® browser to surf the web and also provides access to all of your files, emails, photos and movies on a larger screen in the office, on the road or at home.

Motorola XOOM™ Tablet

Android tablets will abound this year as CES but only a few will be high quality and different. The Motorola XOOM looks like one of the great ones.

Motorola XOOM

  • Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), the tablet specific version of Android ready
  • 3G radio but is upgradeable via software to 4G LTE (means there’s a dual chip probably and the software upgrade will turn it on)
  • NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2: 1GHz dual-core processor;
  • 10.1 inch 1280 x 800 High resolution display,
  • Suports HD content (720p video capture & full 1080p playback/streaming);
  • 5 MP rear-facing camera with dual LED flash/2MP front-facing camera. It has 32GB on board user memory, SD card support after software update,
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM.

Again the docking acessories allow you to output content through external speakers or your HD TV.
